Writer and Media Producer, November Productions
It was both a meaningful and fulfilling experience to collaborate with my colleagues in cinema in launching the Berlin chapter of WIFT. Our meetings at top industry events such as the Berlinale, Cannes and the German Film Awards created unique and invaluable networking opportunities for top skilled professional women in film. Our activities also drew attention to the continued gender gap ubiquitous in our field. According to studies by Dr. Martha Lauzen, the status quo of a male-dominated film industry remains to this day with women holding less than 7% of the directorial reigns on the top 250 films. Lauzen’s study also evidenced that women leading positions tend to hire significantly more women than their male counterparts on film productions. This data underlines the necessity and great importance of organizations such as WIFTG to generate and increase women’s positions of power in film. I continue to be a strong supporter of the ideals and aims behind WIFT International and WIFT Germany and am impressed by their integrity and continued efforts to effect real and lasting transformation in the media landscape for women.
